Antique Swiss French
jaspe
glazed pottery, Poteries de Bonfol, Jura, Switzerland.
A rather large and heavy rounded pitcher with a slightly tapered body and a prominent rolling handle. Its exterior was sealed in an active and varied
jaspe
(jasper) glaze in swirling misty olive-green colors along with browns and blues. The bottom side of the pitcher’s base was coarsely glazed around a drier spot with two stamps. The pitcher’s interior was sealed in a smooth off-white color glaze.
Origin -
One of the aforementioned stamps is the number ‘4’ and the other is a partial round maker’s stamp. I had thought this pitcher was French likely from Savoy. I came to learn from a reputed expert with near certainty that it was Swiss French from Poteries de Bonfol in the Jura region of Switzerland, which was produced around 1905 to 1920. I later wrote to a local museum for confirmation of the same, which was provided to me.

Condition –
Antique glazed pottery large pitcher in very good condition. Its clay body is durable. The jug’s exterior glaze is bright, and stable with a network of fine cracks or crazing. Its interior glaze is stable with much less crazing.
